My Hero: Diane Paige Blondet by katiedidPosted by: info
katiedidDiane Paige Blondet by katiedidMy hero is Diane Paige Blondet. She is the program director for a shelter in Hartford called My Sister's Place. She co-ordinates 7 different programs from adult education to rehab. She is a remarkable person and I hope to work with her later in the school year. With Diane's help I am hoping to get Miss Porters to donate our food surplus to My Sister's Place and other shelters like it.

She really left an impression on me. Specifically when we talked about her work in another field of community service, she said "sometimes I became really discouraged because I felt as though I wasn't making a difference. But one day a woman who I had helped told me that she named her child after me, and at that moment I realized that I had touched at least one person's life for the better, and just that difference in one person's life was something worthwhile."

I would give the same advice to a young person who is trying to get involved as Dianne gave to me. And that is to do something you love, and something that you feel others can benefit from and enjoy.

I like to hang out w/ friends, and talk on the phone and AIM in my spare time. I belong to a few different groups and clubs on campus. One of which is the community service group, Concordia.

My likes and dislikes? hmmm... well I like long walks on the beach, apple pie, k-telle, vintage cars, Starbucks, and photo. I really dislike when people complain about things that they have control over but are too lazy to change. I don’t like florescent lighting.

I did this project because it sounded like a fun way to get involved in the community, and I love photography. I now have a new awareness of all the things that we need to work on in Connecticut. Not fun things to think about, but they exist. I think we sometimes forget just how lucky we are.

A community leader is someone that tries to improve the place they in live for the better, even if they don’t see any direct material rewards.
