This project brought girls from the greater Hartford community and students from Miss Porter’s together to learn about community activism and photography. These are two things that I want to incorporate into my future career, so this internship was a perfect fit for me. Being back in CT and at Porter's was definitely an eye-opening experience for me. After I graduated I never thought I would return to Porter's but two years later I am back. Not until after I graduated did I realize how Porter's helped and changed me and working as an intern gave me an opportunity to share with others girls what I learned. Reflecting on this past month I realize that not only did the girls learn from me, but I learned a lot about them, too. I not only learned new dances and all the words to every song played on 93.7, but they also shared their passions, their realities and their dreams with me. I got so much pleasure waking up each morning knowing that I would be working with such a great group of girls. This project also gave us the opportunity to get out into the greater Hartford community and meet people doing wonderful things for their towns and cities. I felt a special connection to the community of Hartford because it is such a small s truggling city, but it has potential to be really great. The city is rich in diversity and culture and I believe that the MPS community and Hartford will benefit by becoming more involved with each other. I was also inspired by all the people who selflessly commit their time to improving their communities. I was so impressed, not only because these people give back to their community but they are so passionate about what they do. In between teaching a student how to use her camera, meeting Ed Johnetta Miller and Ronald Fernandez and eating beef patties with coco bread, I discovered that my passion for photography, community activism, and children will lead me back to CT where I started. | My Hero: Ronald Fernandez by Mariposa | The person I chose for my hero is Ronald Fernandez who is a professor at CCSU. He is the Director for the Center for Caribbean & Latin American Studies as well as the Coordinator of the International Studies curriculum. He also writes a monthly column for The Hartford Courant. He has written a number of books about the history and culture of Puerto Rico. I chose him as my hero because he has devoted himself to helping the Latino community in CT. He is very involved in community organizing on a business level. He wants people in the area to become more aware of the resources and businesses that are Latino owned. When I asked him how he felt about his photo appearing on the side of a CT Transit bus he replied, "If it in any way can help make people more aware of the Latino community I want my photo on the bus."
