Welcome to Act Like You Care

| My Hero: Mr. Darrell Garner by Marlo | My hero is Mr. Darrell Garner. Currently he is the president of the Board of Directors for the West End Community center. Mr. Garner has been a board member of the West End Civic Association for 3 years, a resident of the West End for 12 years and a resident of Hartford for 44 years. He is committed to Hartford and its people. Even though Mr. Garner has had ill health at times, his selflessness, his continual motivation and incredible drive to do good for others never fades. He amazes me. "There are many ways of getting paid. Helping people improve their lives or our environment is all the pay I need. It's the kind of pay that you can not bring to the bank but it's a happiness that money can never buy."

| My Hero: Jennifer Hadlock by Margee | I chose Jennifer Hadlock as my hero because she is simply amazing. She lives in the West End neighborhood of Hartford and was hired by the West End Civic Association to be their community organizer. This means Jennifer is the liaison between the residents of the West End and city officials. It sounds deceivingly simple but it is challenging work to bridge a diverse socioeconomic and racial group of people. Never mind the fact that it is a low-paying job that is literally 24-7. I think many people would be surprised to know that she obtained a law degree to better assist people in organizing themselves so that they may accomplish their community desires. I have been witness to two recent desires...I've played basketball at the outdoor basketball court that was built within the last year and I've seen the building that is to become the community center.

| My Hero: Kevin Rice by Manda | When it came time for me to pick my hero for the project many thoughts crossed my mind. I decided on Kevin Rice, the Entertainment Director at Hole in the Wall Gang. Last summer I was a camp counselor at Double H Hole in the Wall which is another one of Paul Newman's summer camps for terminally ill kids. I learned many life lessons about living from kids who where dying. I knew what kind of energy, strength, and endurance it takes to work at these camps. Kevin has worked at the Hole in the Wall since 99. http://www.holeinthewallgang.org/

| My Hero: Judy Levy by Varroza | When it came time to choose a hero I decided that I wanted to choose a person who was very actively involved with animals. I found out about an organization called Animal Friends of Connecticut and quickly got in contact with Judy Levy. Levy is the director of Animal Friends of Connecticut, a no-kill all volunteer non-profit animal shelter. While at times there may be a few dogs at the shelter, for the most part the shelter takes in stray abandoned and/or abused cats.

| My Hero: Ed Johnetta Miller by Emme | Ed Johnetta Miller was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina but moved to Providence, Rhode Island when she was six years old. I picked her because she now lives in Hartford, Connecticut and she is involved in many different community programs teaching pre-schoolers and senior citizens how to quilt. She also donates quilts she and others have made to various organizations for fundraisers. When asked what she likes best about her work, she responded that she enjoys people and being able to "do something for someone." http://www.edjohnetta.com

| My Hero: Elizabeth Horton Sheff by Gizzy | Elizabeth Horton Sheff was very inspiring. Her persistence, determination, and over-all drive are attributes I wish to inhabit or rather flourish. She is a great role model to all and I enjoyed speaking with her. Taking pictures of Ms. Sheff were easy, she’s naturally photogenic. My future career and her line of work will guarantee our interactions with each other in the future. http://www.ctgreens.org/hortonsheff/

| My Hero: Sharon Sandler by salami | My hero is actually my mother, Sharon Sandler. I have noticed over the past 3 years that she works amazingly hard to help kids that without help or guidance might loose what they are able to achieve. The fact that she is my mother and I see her on a daily basis has nothing to do with the fact that I chose to interview her. She is an amazing person.

|
| My Hero: Jerry Cooney by Deja | My hero is Jerry Cooney, my father. It was very nice to take pictures of my hero because I know that my hero (Jerry Cooney) does a good job at what he does. I felt excited for my hero because I know he was honored that I chose him. My hero works at Inter Community Mental Health Inc. He is an Out Reach Case Manager. He gets satisfaction by helping people improve their lives despite having difficulties. "There are major misconceptions about mental illness. I have worked with people with Masters degrees. People, in crisis, are not getting the help they need immediately because the system is already under-funded&."

| My Hero: Jacky Wright by Jazzy | My hero, Ms. Jacky Wright, works at General Electric. She is involved with the community via a group called Elfun. She started 2 years ago. She teaches kids, does projects, helps build shelters, and playscapes. She also does mentoring. Works 30 or 40 hours over a 5-month period. She likes to give gifts to the homeless around the holidays.

|
| My Hero: Treda Collier by NE-NE | My hero is Treda Collier. She is the founder of Sweet Sanctuary. Sweet Sanctuary will provide help to girls to get through their conditions at home with their parents. She is helping to build self-esteem in young girls of color. She made this program because she had these similar issues in her childhood. She really wants to help young girls. It was interesting to hear Collier’s answers to my questions.
Collier said ''Let a man know that you should be treated with respect." Another thing that she said that I liked is "We should always be able to pick ourselves up"

| My Hero: Ronald Fernandez by Mariposa | The person I chose for my hero is Ronald Fernandez who is a professor at CCSU. He is the Director for the Center for Caribbean & Latin American Studies as well as the Coordinator of the International Studies curriculum. He also writes a monthly column for The Hartford Courant. He has written a number of books about the history and culture of Puerto Rico. I chose him as my hero because he has devoted himself to helping the Latino community in CT. He is very involved in community organizing on a business level. He wants people in the area to become more aware of the resources and businesses that are Latino owned. When I asked him how he felt about his photo appearing on the side of a CT Transit bus he replied, "If it in any way can help make people more aware of the Latino community I want my photo on the bus."

| My Hero: Thomas Phillips by Chata | My hero's name is Thomas Phillips. He is the President and CEO of Capital Region Workforce in Hartford, CT. He finds jobs for the youth and adults. He provides businesses with qualified workers. When I asked him why he wanted to go into this field he said, "I want to have a positive impact on people's lives."

| My Hero: Rabbi Steven Chatinover by crow_lea | Rabbi Chatinover had spent seven years as a congregational rabbi at Temple Beth Hillel in South Windsor before he became a teacher at SSDS, a small Jewish day school in West Hartford for children age three through middle school. There, as long as I have known him, he has been addressed solely by his title, Rabbi. This is entirely appropriate: “Rabbi” comes from “rav”, the Hebrew word for “teacher”. Some may think of rabbis strictly as religious leaders, “Jewish priests”, but they are first and foremost teachers. The study of the Tanach (Old Testament) and the many related commentaries and writings is central to Judaism. This religion would be nothing without its teachers and my Rabbi was a once-in-a-lifetime teacher.
